Pretty much everyone has access to the internet in the developed world, and seeing as though you’re reading this I’m going to hazard a guess that you are a part of it. Gone are the days when you could curse on social media because your mum hadn’t signed up yet. Or worse, your gran.

With the scale and breadth of the online universe in 2015, you can achieve a vast range of things without ever leaving your chair. Some of them are productive, some of them not so much. Instead of just using it to socialise or waste time, though, isn’t it time we started using this vast and unique resource for productive ends?

In this article I’m going to show you a few ways to get an education on the internet. Not strictly an academic one, but a few places you can learn new things, expand your knowledge, and hopefully make yourself more employable, more affluent, or just more informed.

Take a free course

Coursera has to be one of the finest resources out there. As they put it, their mission is to “provide universal access to the world’s best education”. And for free, too. Surely you can’t go wrong? They have a variety of topics and areas that are covered from arts and humanities, to the sciences and economics. All that stuff inbetween? Yeah, that as well. It can cater to most desires and timescales – you’re better off checking it out yourself!

Start a business

The revered Entrepreneur Mag should be your go to place if you have an idea and would like to start a business, or even if you’re a few steps down the line and want help and advice on expanding, marketing, and working towards success. From start-up to finished product, there’s advice from some of the world’s frontrunning business leaders that can only help you if you have your own big ideas.

Get good, make money

If you’re going to spend hours on the internet, you might as well invest some time in getting skilled at something that can make you money. Online poker is bigger than it’s ever been, and there are plenty of sites out there to help with advice on getting ahead of the competition so you can cash in. You can find some great tips here, watch excellent videos on YouTube around the web, and find some of the best sites to help your funds go a little bit further.

Skills that save on the bills

Let’s face it, not many of us revel in the chance to fix something when it goes wrong in the house. You put it off and put it off until forced, maybe do it wrong a couple of times, and then give in to get a professional anyway. It’d be a good thing to save your wasted time, effort and money to actually be able to do them yourself, right? Home Dzine has lots on offer to help you with your home improvement, whether it’s upgrading, tackling broken stuff, or even getting more active in the garden. You might even enjoy it!

There you have it; a few good ways to make productive use of your time, and maybe even save or earn some money at the end of it. Now you just have to get involved!
